Modern Witchcraft: A Reclamation of Self
A3 Risograph Print.
‘Modern Witchcraft: A Reclaimation of Self’ explores violence against modern women involved in witchcraft, spiritualism and pagan beliefs. The piece centres on a naked female form with an extenuated vulva, surrounded by symbolic items associated with practicing witchcraft and protection. The aggressive act of confronting the viewer with raw female form ( inspired by Sheela na Gig) encourages audience engagement and conjures thought provoking discussion.
The reclaimation of bodily autonomy confronts misogynistic violence against women, especially against those who practice witchcraft, and offers hope and freedom for both women and girls. The never-ending battle for respect and stopping hateful violence is a shared experience for all female identifying people.
Through this risograph piece, I offer a glimpse into what can be achieved by confronting the harming bodies, how solidarity can offer comfort those hurt and how progress aids the battle for women’s safety in the modern day.
